Hi, A friend has bought a second hand Emachine 3240 Desktop with XP sp2 for his young son to learn on. The Antivirus expired in 2005.
He as several infections and also the previous owner as left all is details and programs on it. I recommended that he reset it to factory settings and i printed your reset guide for him but he says none of the tips work on that pc. He doesn't have a recovery disc and theres nothing i can find from Google. I went to Emachine site and the number 3240 is not recognised. If anyone can help me with more information i would be gratefull.
My friend is not really up on computers so if theres a way to do it ill have a go for him and put some Antivirus on it. Hi and Welcome to TSF! There is no reason that he needs to do a factory restore unless he wants too. You can have him contact our Virus team to remove the virus. Then install Microsoft Security Essentials to keep him safe. It is a free Security Software provided by Microsoft.
If you are going to contact our virus team: Please read all of the instructions found here: After reading all of the instructions found above, post the required logs here: Do not post any logs here! - If you wish to do the factory restore: When the computer is booting press F11 repeatedly when the message 'Press F11 to start recovery' is displayed.
The recovery will load and display a menu of options. Scroll to the option that says “Full System Restore (with Backup).' Or just pick the normal restore with no backup. I think the easy option would be to do a factory restore on the pc if possible. He has Macafee and Norton antivirus, both expired.
Two broadband connections, two software for printers, loads of unwanted programs and lots of pirated software. This is why i suggested, if possible rather than uninstall a bit at a time do a reset. I have tried F11 and all i get is the message as to change the boot mode from the Dvd drive to the Hard dive. It takes ages for the PC to fire up and then when its running it keeps freezing.
Thanks for the help. Ill get the pc to my house and then i can spend a bit of time on it. The message from pressing F11 is telling you that you need to go into BIOS and reset the boot order. Once that's done, you should be able to boot to the recovery portion of the main HDD, if it exists. To check that it does exist, allow the computer to boot up normally and look for a d: drive, which will have just a few folders on it. If that doesn't exist, they probably required the first owner to create their own recovery disks.
As far as removing the 'Bloatware' that eMachines put on, after you've done a restore, install ' from a thumb drive, then using the advanced mode, uninstall all that junk they added. Takes some time, but will be worth it as far as removing nags, junk software, and increasing overall operational speed. Without a partition on 'C', then the recovery disks were either provided, or in many cases, required by the machine's software by nagging the original purchaser to make the recovery disks. Doubtful you could find the recovery disks online at a reputable site. If it was me, I'd just drop a legal copy of WinXP in the CD, boot to that and just do a full install. Best to check all the hardware drivers and find what hardware components you have & the driver versions they are first.
May 9, 2013 - Install all 3 drivers: Chipset, MEI and storage. AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver (32 and 64 bit). Acer Emachines D525 Drivers for Windows 7 (32/64Bi. HP Pavilion dv6-3240ca Drivers For Windows7 (32Bit.
EMachines should have something on their site that will get you to the proper drivers, maybe requiring an email to them. There's usually a large printed number on the mobo that with a search should get you to the proper manufacturers site of the mobo, and you could probably get the drivers there instead of at eMachines. More help please. I have uninstalled all that was'nt needed and have installed a years Antivirus.
I have installed all updates from Microsoft but i cannot install sp3. It hangs on checking for space on hard drive. I had it running for over an hour and nothing happened. I Googled the problem and the only info i can find is to make sure theres sufficient space.
There is 70 GB so that cant be why it wont install. It seems to download ok but will not install so if i download it and put it on a disc on my Vista pc, i imagine the same will happen when i install it on to the other pc with XP.
Can anyone help with the problem.
