At 3500 miles my 2013 A4-based Allroad developed a notchy feeling in the steering at random times. It progressively became more frequent and worse and worse until I felt unsafe driving it. Steering notches would get so heavy and hard to overcome it would result in overcorrecting and oversteering every time. I was flat out scared to drive this car. Since this video the dealership has replaced the rack with an 'updated' rack (P/N ending in -AC) but the notchy feeling returned the very next day. Many 2013 Audi owners of many different models have been reporting the same symptoms, raplacing steering racks and having the problem return.
Audi will notify owners, and dealers will update the software so that the power supply to the coolant pump is deactivated if the pump becomes blocked with debris, free of charge. The recall is.
So far no word from Audi of America. UPDATE: Long overdue update, but better late than never: Audi replaced the rack twice but I still had the same issue. They did it to ensure my satisfaction and that they were taking action. I discovered a VAGCOM fix that solved the issue or at least masked the symptoms. Around this time last year Audi pushed out a software update for the electric steering racks on early B8.5 A4/5/ and A6. Since the update things have been flawless. This whole time it was a software error.
I now have 27k miles and the thing runs like a top. I love this car. I still would not recommend University Audi for service. Took them 4 attempts to get the alignment right only because they were cutting corners.
